LADY MAIL INTERVIEW
— Recently you released a new track, “Istoriya o Novom” (“A Story About the New”). It’s your first release in more than eight years. How was it born?
— This song is the second me. I performed it in the style of French chanson, and it’s dedicated to all of us women. I turned 40 this year, and I’ve started hearing women my age say things like, “I’m already old, nobody needs me anymore…” I don’t feel that way at all.
I feel amazing at my age — I love how I look, I love my wisdom, I love the wonderful relationships I have with my loved ones today.
My song “Istoriya o Novom” is meant to remind all women: at any age, we must remain queens.
Look at Western stars — Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore… They’re always stunning! You can see they love themselves, even though they’re long past 25. I want our mentality to embrace that understanding too: today, a woman runs the show, and she’s allowed to do whatever she wants.
You’ve been in the music industry since the late 1990s. How has the internet changed it?
— It’s like two different lives: before the internet and after. Just look at today’s youth — they’re constantly on their computers.
As for music, people weren’t as overwhelmed by endless choices as they are today. They eagerly waited for new albums, stood in lines to buy them, waited for their favorite artists after concerts to get autographs and talk to them. It was very sweet and touching.
Now stars live their lives publicly. They’re online 24/7, sharing what they’re doing and where they’re going. On one hand, it’s great that you can watch your idol anytime. On the other, the charm of artists’ inaccessibility is gone.
It makes me a bit sad that the internet steals live communication from us. People used to look forward to meeting friends to talk. Now look at restaurants — everyone is sitting there staring at their phones.
What projects are you currently working on?
— I’m continuing to record my solo album. And Lena and I have many plans regarding t.A.T.u — tours and trips.
My motto today is “Forward and only forward.” I’m full of strength and energy and feel that everything in my life is just beginning.
You have many fans, but also haters, especially regarding your appearance. What do you say to that?
— I honestly don’t care what anyone says or writes about me. It’s even funny that my appearance gives someone no peace. I read it and get surprised — how do people find the time to write nasty things to someone they don’t even know? Aren’t they tired? I’m very far removed from all that.
I have so much to think about in my own life that I don’t want to waste time thinking about haters.
